Name the chemical and the evaluator
IARC’s 2023 evaluation classified PFOA as carcinogenic to humans, Group 1, and PFOS as possibly carcinogenic to humans, Group 2B. [8] Reporting should preserve both the chemical names and the different classifications. Treating every PFAS as interchangeable makes a headline easier to write but a scientific claim harder to assess.
Do not turn a hazard label into a personal verdict
IARC explains that a hazard classification identifies a capacity to cause cancer rather than the risk associated with a particular exposure level. [9] That distinction is essential when a story also includes a company name or an executive’s portrait. The scientific conclusion should not be presented as a finding that the pictured person caused an individual’s disease.
Why the leadership name is here
Inhance Technologies announced Prakash Iyer’s CEO appointment in October 2024. [1] This is the leadership context for the article. It does not supply evidence of a private motive, a personal admission or a particular exposure event. We have not invented any such evidence.
The questions an explanation should answer
Our editorial checklist asks: Which substance is being discussed? What kind of conclusion is the source making? What exposure question is relevant? What additional information would be needed to connect a general finding with a specific situation? Those questions make room for serious scrutiny without pretending that a single label answers every scientific and legal issue.
A stronger form of criticism
We favour criticism that states its factual basis, identifies its inferences and can be corrected when better evidence appears. It is possible to demand clear answers while refusing to invent them. The cover’s large vial and crimson shadows are symbolic editorial choices. They identify a topic and a mood; the linked science, rather than the image, carries the scientific claim. This article is independently authored and does not speak in Iyer’s name.
